"This is the vivid account of Richard M. Gordon, who grew up in "Hell's Kitchen" in New York City, and in August 1940 enlisted in the Army and was assigned to duty in the Philippines. He attained the rank of sergeant during combat in Bataan. In April 1942, he was captured by the Japanese and forced to participate in the infamous Bataan Death March, and subsequently held prisoner of war in several camps including O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, and Hiraoka on Mitsushima in Japan. At O'Donnell and Cabanatuan he was assigned to burial detail until malaria compelled him to join a group of POWs who were shipped to Japan as laborers in November 1942. Japan, unlike Germany or the US for that matter, has never come to terms with its actions leading up to and during WW II. The revisionists continue to make ridiculous statements like " the Rape on Nanking" never happened, " "all POWs were treated with honor,"" we never did that here." This book, like so many others of the topic, help keep the truth alive. They prevent the revisionists from sweeping the truth under the rug, from hiding away any mention of "the unmentionable acts" that were done by and in the name of The Emperor. It helps give meaning and value to the blood, sweat, and tears of those who experienced the terror and anguish of being a "guest of the Emperor." for us, and for the Japanese as a nation, it helps recall that those who do not remember the past, are doomed to repeat it.

Richard Gordon and my father shared some of the same experiences, as they were both in the Bataan Death March, were on the same hell ship to Japan and were in the same prison camp together. My father went on to Kanose prison camp in 1944, as Mr. Gordon notes in his book. This book has enabled me in my research on my father, Jack, to understand what he went through. It has given me an even greater appreciation of those men who were prisoners of the Japanese. And for those captured on Bataan and taking the Death March, and those who fought on Corregidor, it only serves to further bring to the forefront, that these men were indeed considered EXPENDABLE by their government. In fact, in all of the hoopla of World War II, what happened on Bataan and Corregidor has all but been forgotten in the annals of history, except for those men and their families who fought there, died there, or were imprisoned. Some came home, most did not. My father notes in his letter home, after release, that of the 120 men in his company (Headquarters) in the 194th Tank Battalion, only 32 were coming home. He notes that that is apparently true with the whole battalion. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gordon, and several other men who were in prison with my father. I have been corresponding with others. I have met men who were in the 194th with him. How any of these men survived is a miracle. Mr. Gordon's story, along with those of others, deserves everyone's attention.

This is one very interesting and compelling POW account. It is an amazing and admirable story, and a highly recommended read. It is engrossing, gripping, dramatic material, as most all of the POW accounts from Japan are. Having studied many of them, I look for different facets or facts that distinguish one memoir from others. Major Gordon has many, in his account. He is not bashful to mention homosexuality in the camps, which is rare in written records. The reader will only wish that he gave specific eye-witness, first-person accounts, rather than these kinds of sweeping generalizations (which could even be hearsay, exaggeration, or rumor that he just overheard?).There is a unique and rather morbid theme running throughout the account, from front to back, and it recurs regularly, from beginning to end: Some (or even "many" as Gordon terms it) American POWs were "predators" upon their own fellow POWs, with low-down and exploitative behavior when the chips were way, way down. Gordon makes the case for this claim rather well, with concrete examples. At the same time, he channels most of his bitterness on that issue into a consistent criticism of American "officers" in general, and their lack of "leadership" in the camps. It comes across pretty harshly for the reader who places himself in the exact circumstances of these prisoner-officers. Time after time, Gordon does not explain exactly what an officer could have done in the described circumstances, without being instantly beheaded, killed quickly, or beaten severely if not nearly to death. What advantage would there have been in that? Of course, Gordon HIMSELF was not resisting and standing up with a "backbone" or doing any of the things he seemingly expected some officer to be doing, in the face of what was obviously total Japanese control and violence at a whim.I agree that the standards for military officer conduct should be exemplary and irreproachable, even under the extreme and debased conditions of Japanese captivity in WWII, but need they be suicidal or counter-productive? He opens a fierce, literally life-and-death issue with this criticism, without any voice from the other side. Lots of these officers died in the camps, while Gordon did not, so it rubs a bit awkward, as a personal "axe to grind."

Now that we have reached the tenth anniversary, this past July 26th, of our father's death the powerful details of his personal account still send chills down my spine. As his daughter Suzanne, I am working on the story of his surviving children and the aftermath of his horrific experience which impacted us all throughout our growing years. It is a story that must be told. It will be dedicated to (among others) our beloved mother Jean Alice Pellechi Gordon. She was his wife of 47 years. She was as much a hero in our family as Dad was, for the love and dedication throughout all the years, to the shattered soul who returned from the war. The story truly ended with her death in 1993. I remain grateful for her mention in the Epilogue included in this book.

I recommend this book. It has good information and was very helpful to me. I'm glad I found this book.

Unfairly probably; I tend to overlook the 'dummies' series when searching for business topics because, well, 'I'm no dummy". But I desperately needed a crash course on conflict resolution and didn't have a lot of time to review a whole bunch of books; so bought the Kindle version for reading on a recent trip to prepare for a CR session I had to lead when I returned. I found it well written, highly practical and full of concrete action steps that I did my best to implement. It's a book I intend to revisit quite a bit as I work to be a better manager to my employees at work.

I have already used this book to resolve interpersonal relationship problems on the workplace and have heavily post-noted important places I want to refer to again and again. The principles are very sound and may be applied to many other kinds of conflicts besides the ones you find at the workplace. It's fun to read, too.

I love this book! It is so inspiring. It is my favourite, and I have lots. I have it as a coffee table book so I can enjoy it often. I have done mosaics for 5 yrs. but none in her style of using the entire plate as the design. I just use the rim. However, when I get a set of dishes with great designs in the middle as well as the edge I will make a table. Get this book - it is so beautiful!

Nice book for those of us who love to do mosaics. Sometimes I need just a little more help being creative. The projects are ones that you have been looking for the instructions for. The book has great photographs and lots of ideas on where to get your treasures to mosaic. I really look for classy things and different things to embelish with mosaics and this book gets to the meat of what you need to accomplish your project. Sometimes I have the ideas but I'm not quite sure what it will really look like before I start. This book gets you ready to enjoy the projects that you make. It also helps you to personalize that project you created to be a fine gift your friends and family will treasure.

Sorta like little old lady look. Several cleaver things to slap some plates on, but VERY repetitious.

Great Idea's, great book.

This book is filled with stunning ideas and instructions. I bought it for the seashell section, and was thrilled that it was substantial. Highly recommended.

I love this book! It contains many gorgeous pique assiette (recycled broken china) projects, as well as some using seashells. Best of all, the projects are beautiful but not overwhelming (i.e., a beginner should be able to master them), and they shouldn't take anywhere near as much time or money as most projects would, yet you'd be proud to give or display them.

This book is very inspirational for those who have already done mosaics. It focuses more on the use of plates and seashells rather than stained glass and mosaic tiles. I really appreciated the author's informative text and pictures. I have read many of the mosaics books Amazon offers, and I keep coming back to this one for inspiration.Half of the book is dedicated to generous use of seashells, so those of us in land-locked states may not be able to play along.

I have yet to create a mosaic project but if I ever get around to it, this book will serve as my inspiration. The projects illustrated are beautiful, better than crafty, IMO, and gets your imagination going. I kept taking it out of the library every time I thought I might do a project with one of my many garage sale finds. Finally, I thought it was a book worth owning. So I bought it. Some day...

Though I consider myself a solid fan of Ms. Billson's work, I came to this Kindle Original with modest expectations - for which I blame that humble subtitle "A Conversation with Russ Meyer." In point of fact, this is the transcript of a day-long monologue of sorts by the Monarch of Mammaries, and given the non-intrusive presence of its compiler (a proven wit and aesthete in her own right), it reads not like an interview or a conversation but as a freewheeling autobiography. It's obviously more compact than Meyer's three volume A CLEAN BREAST but no less candid nor colorful. I've read other books about Meyer, but this book not only gives you the stories, it gives you the storytelling at first-hand, with all its delights and inconsistencies intact, making it an excellent value. It doesn't just present you with Meyer the author, or the filmmaker, but the man - who is remarkably up-front about his failures and faults, the better to stand proud when he succeeds. Because this "conversation" was approached only as that, not as a potential book, it doesn't cover Meyer's entire filmography with the thoroughness one might wish (for example, there is nothing on FINDERS KEEPERS, LOVERS WEEPERS or "lost" films like EROTICA), but we get most of the highlights of Meyer's private and professional lives along with the headlights. His description of Roger Ebert's screenplay for the unfilled UP THE VALLEY OF THE BEYOND alone will have you screaming with laughter. Billson also reserves some room at the end in which to explore her own rightfully conflicted feelings about the ramping-up of sadistic violence on Meyer's latter-day work, giving his filmography some of the most incisive attention it's had in English. An absorbing read, well worth acquiring.

Great stuff! Right from the horses mouth. A real treat to be able to read this transciption of a car ride conversation with film maker Russ Meyer, I only wish it could it go on forever. Once in the late 90's I called the number on one of his vhs tapes to request a catalog. Had no idea it was his home phone number! The lady that answered took my information for a catalog and asked "Do you want to talk to Russ?" I was surprised and asked "what?" She asked me again, I nervously said "Thank you but no. Just let him know I'm a fan" Damn, I should have talked to him.

This is a summary of one of the best books I've ever read on the subject of food. As Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Functional Medicine and director of the Ultra-Wellness Center, Dr. Hyman is highly qualified to offer an excellent approach to eating healthy. The full length book offers the reasons why a very high percentage of our population is obese or overweight and offers a solutions. He tells us how we have been fooled into eating things that are actually unhealthy.This may surprise you. He backs it up with scientific research.The full book is very clear as to how we can change our eating habits to be healthy and feel better. If you are serious about living healthier I recommend that you skip the summary and go directly to the full book.

I bought the Kindle Edition of this book yesterday, and it is a VERY difficult read because of poor grammar and syntax issues. That disturbs me because the book is rich with valid information about the extreme damage that has been inadvertently done to the human diet by American Agribusiness since the end of WWII in an effort to meet the food quantity needs of the "Baby Boomer" population explosion. Had I not been well informed on this subject before buying Dr. Hyman's book I would most likely have stopped reading at the first chapter, the grammar and syntax are so bad. To many people poor grammar and/or syntax is an indication the writer is poorly informed, but this is not the case here. I hope the publisher reads this revue and hires a well qualified English Language Editor to clean up this problem because the book does contain information that is equally as critical to long-term human survival as the global warming issue. "Knowledge is power." At least, the English language Kindle version of this book needs a thorough editing if it is to reach for its full "power" potential of spreading critical and accurate information about the irreversible damage that is underway to this planet's food supply.

I absolutely love the summary of this book. It's simple, direct and to the point. It's perfect for highlighting key takeaways and offers great advice. I basically use this as a food bible.

It is not what I thought it would be. I thought it would list the foods with quantities to eat and to avoid. I'm sorry I bought it.

Its an easy read as its supposed to be. I wish I had bought the book authored by Hyman, the typos and poor English in this "summary" devalue the information.

About the Author

Kevin Lacz left college and joined the US Navy following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He served with SEAL Team THREE as a sniper, breacher, and medic and did two combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received a Bronze Star with Valor, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals in addition to others for his service. Kevin served as a technical advisor and played himself in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated film American Sniper. He lives in Florida with his wife Lindsey and their two children.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have friends who are former Teams guys who, along the way, helped me stay safe in my career thus I do have a special place in my heart for these guys. That said, I've never met Mr. Lacz so I have no personal connection with him though I learned, after reading his book that he apparently lives in my old stomping grounds in the Panhandle.I bought this book after seeing him on Fox & Friends talking about his book. I decided I'd buy it as a way of quietly supporting him and those who have fought for us. I figured it would be like all the other books out there where authors talks more about their accomplishment, with perhaps some embellishments here and there, mix in a little CDI (chick dig it) lingo and presto "I'm a hero." That is NOT the case at all here. Mr. Lacz gives the ground truth of war and the warriors who fight to protect our freedoms along with his own experiences, warts and all.The Last Punisher will put you under the helmet and in the books kicking of moon dust as you walk the streets of Ramadi. But where other "warrior" books want to share only the "good" stuff, Lacz shares some of the otherwise "boring" stuff to give the reader a better perspective of how things actually happen. He talks about the number of times they got geared up, stressed trying to get to their objective, finding nothing, then stressed getting safely back home. It happens. Not every day is profitable. Yet they still paid the fee in sweat equity and fatigue only to come up empty handed. But when they were profitable, grab your backside and hold on. If you've seen the movies; American Sniper, Lone Survivor, 13 hrs, and so forth, you can easily visualize where Lacz is taking you. You can easily visualize how SEALs move from cover to cover. You walk along side of him, preparing for a direct action contact. And you're there with the guys witnessing him screwing things up.But beyond putting you under the helmet, Lacz puts you in the head of a warrior and shares what it take to survive mentally. And why, when they come back home, they have nowhere near the difficulty readjusting to life than the other 98% of us would have. Sure their humor may be "sick" to some. Sure they may find something funny it's hitting the fan. It is something very difficult to grasp if you've never been there and Lacz takes us to there. "Teams and shhhstuff." (Forgive me Dauber but Amazon censors)Lacz does not get into the politics of war save for the REMFs (get the book for the definition) who were calling the shots putting people in harms way oftentimes with poor judgment. The politics were clearly pay grades above his and I believe he was right to leave his opinions out of this book. For managers and supervisor, pay attention here. Learn to read your people. Learn how to feed them and how to rest them. Learn how to keep them hungry for more. And if you're not shedding tears when he shares bringing Marc Lee (HOOYAH! MARC LEE) home, you're not human and you need to get yourself checked out.If you're an American, if you love this country, please show your support with the purchase of this book. It's such a small price to pay for what he and the SEAL Team THREE "Punishers" have given you.

Everybody has already said it but I think Kevin says it best, "Teams and Sh*t" and when he says it, you just get it. I think the book is a terrific story. I felt like I learned less about SEAL/s and more about Kevin and the men he served with. Dauber was a solid operator, a good man in front of the train or the back. He did it all and it was refreshing to get a real honest "New Guy" take on being a SEAL. I enjoyed the book tremendously and seeing the hints of friendship that existed between Kevin (Dauber) and Chris Kyle (American Sniper) were very humanizing. Chris's somewhat protective nature struck Kevin enough to write about it. I think Kevin has to write another book about his second deployment and after that he needs to clean the heavy weapons "Teams and Sh*t". If Kevin wrote it I'd even be interested in a book on Marc Lee. Kevin had bonded with Marc Lee and both he and Chris spoke very highly of that man. I know that as long as men like Kevin, Marc and Chris live and breathe the borders of this great nation will be clearly defined, proudly guarded and fiercely defended. Great book Dauber! Stoked for your second effort! Come on! Do it Dauber!!!Still a 5 star book. I saw another comment that gives the AUDIO part of this book 2 stars and I have to agree. ALL OF THE AUDIO BOOKS YOU CAN GET AS COMPANIONS TO KINDLE ARE TERRIBLE. This is another great look into a world that not a lot of people get to see. To even have a fraction of understanding of what occurred overseas is very important and it should be something that every American strives to understand further. The author explained everything very well and effectively communicated what he and his teammates went through.As a fan of the Jocko podcast I have been fortunate to hear about this deployment from the officer side so it is refreshing to hear an enlisted guy's experience within the same deployment. Additionally, some of the people Lacz mentions in the book have been interviewed on the podcast. Having heard a 2-3 hours interview with Tony on the podcast it made the book that much more enjoyable and understandable.If you are interested in understanding the cost of the luxury we have today in America, listen to the podcast and buy this book.I bought the digital copy and it was well put together and easy to read. Best book on the teams I've read. Fast furious funny. I think this book speaks to the heart of war like few do. Great in every sense.
