Though I consider myself a solid fan of Ms. Billson's work, I came to this Kindle Original with modest expectations - for which I blame that humble subtitle "A Conversation with Russ Meyer." In point of fact, this is the transcript of a day-long monologue of sorts by the Monarch of Mammaries, and given the non-intrusive presence of its compiler (a proven wit and aesthete in her own right), it reads not like an interview or a conversation but as a freewheeling autobiography. It's obviously more compact than Meyer's three volume A CLEAN BREAST but no less candid nor colorful. I've read other books about Meyer, but this book not only gives you the stories, it gives you the storytelling at first-hand, with all its delights and inconsistencies intact, making it an excellent value. It doesn't just present you with Meyer the author, or the filmmaker, but the man - who is remarkably up-front about his failures and faults, the better to stand proud when he succeeds. Because this "conversation" was approached only as that, not as a potential book, it doesn't cover Meyer's entire filmography with the thoroughness one might wish (for example, there is nothing on FINDERS KEEPERS, LOVERS WEEPERS or "lost" films like EROTICA), but we get most of the highlights of Meyer's private and professional lives along with the headlights. His description of Roger Ebert's screenplay for the unfilled UP THE VALLEY OF THE BEYOND alone will have you screaming with laughter. Billson also reserves some room at the end in which to explore her own rightfully conflicted feelings about the ramping-up of sadistic violence on Meyer's latter-day work, giving his filmography some of the most incisive attention it's had in English. An absorbing read, well worth acquiring.

Great stuff! Right from the horses mouth. A real treat to be able to read this transciption of a car ride conversation with film maker Russ Meyer, I only wish it could it go on forever. Once in the late 90's I called the number on one of his vhs tapes to request a catalog. Had no idea it was his home phone number! The lady that answered took my information for a catalog and asked "Do you want to talk to Russ?" I was surprised and asked "what?" She asked me again, I nervously said "Thank you but no. Just let him know I'm a fan" Damn, I should have talked to him.
