I do not agree at all with the negative comments that have been made to this book on this website. Even, because of such bad comments, I was about to not buy the book. But luckily I finally decided to buy it, and I really got it right. I think it is the best work that has been done regarding the systematization of all the recordings made by the Beatles. Never before have I seen a book where a detailed and ordered diagram with the instruments used in each song of the Fab Four appears, as well as the amplifiers, types of recorders and other associated items. I always wanted to know this data, and for that I was losing an incredible time looking for the information in other books and magazines, either printed or on the web. Actually, for me, this book should be included in the select group of works written about the Beatles recordings, and I recommend without a doubt that every great fan of the Liverpool quartet should have this wonderful work in their hands. I imagine that the second volume should be as complete as the first, and I hope to buy it very soon. Thank you Jerry for this excellent and invaluable work, a true gem.

I had such high hopes for this book. As someone who has been a diehard fan since (at the latest) 10 years old as well as someone who loves knowing the details of recording music, this looked like it could've been an indispensible book. My first thought was, "finally!!".But, no. Granted, if you want to know all about the specifics of their recording gear, this is the only book I know of that brings all of that info together in one place. What is presented here about the actual recording of every song is pretty much what you can put together from Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles Recording Sessions" - my original copy of which is so battered and beaten from use that it hardly resembles a book anymore.There are some additional glimpses into the process that this book gives, but just not enough to justify the hefty price tag ($35!!). If this had been sold at a more realistic price ($15-$18), fine. Also, the book runs for 414 pages, however, only the first 220 pages are actual notes on the individual songs. The second half of the book is made up of fifteen appendicies, most of which just take the technical info from the first half and reorganize it into a different format (appendix 4-15 are, in order: electric guitars, acoustic guitars, bass guitars, drums, percussion, pianos and keyboards, other instruments, guitar amplifiers, bass amplifiers, EMI Studios outboard equipment usage, EMI Studios microphones and usage, and explanation of technical equipment).I would suggest before you buy this, find a copy and make sure it's what you want. Like I said, if knowing "Anna (Go to Him)" was recorded to the EMI BTR3 tracking machine along with a mono BTR2 machine, then this book could be a God-send for you. Otherwise, you may just want to pass (or at least wait for the price to drop).

I consider myself to be quite knowledgeable regarding the Beatles studio history and the details of their recording sessions. The author acknowledges the works of his predecessors (Ryan & Kehew, Babiuk, Winn and, of course Mark Lewisohn) and he does a good job of compiling the info from their books, as well as from other sources. The layout is concise and the information detailed. My main issue is the price for this paperback. If it went up to '65 or '66, I would've been more satisfied (like the two volumes of Winn's books). For me, the images of session sheets & EMI reel tape boxes are important. Although many are featured in Mark Lewisohn's book, the more the merrier for me. Finally, even though many photos of the group in the studio coincide with what songs are actually being recorded (most coming from the Beatles Monthly publication), there are still more that could be properly dated, indicating what song(s) were being recorded when these photos were taken. Still highly recommended as a companion to the other books mentioned above.

CAVEAT: I'm writing this after having the read the first 100 pages of this book. If my impressions change at all after reading the rest, I'll amend this review. (SEE EDITS BELOW; I finished the book.)This book is badly written, badly edited, and of questionable accuracy. Grammatical errors are frequent. The author's editorializing is pedestrian, especially compared to the standard set by Lewisohn in his magisterial Beatles-related works.To give an example of the problems with accuracy, Hammack describes Lennon and Harrison's first Vox guitar amps as matching AC30s (to which he adds "/6 Twin", which then becomes "/6 Twin Treble" in later entries; are these new amps, or just inconsistent descriptions?). I'm just about certain that Babiuk described these amps as being one AC30 and one AC15. Similarly, he describes McCartney as playing through a Vox T60 head, called "the Vox T60 head" after its initial introduction, but then later refers to McCartney playing through "the Vox AC30 head". Again, new amp, or mistake in the description?(EDIT: These matters are cleared up in the appendices. However, the initial presentation of these facts is very unclear. And I don't know if Hammack or Babiuk is right about one of the amps being an AC15.)Probably the best thing about this book is the layout, which is crisp and clean in a way that recalls Lewisohn's "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions". But even here, there are problems: I was amused to see an italicized mention of "With The Beatles" switch to plain text for the final "tles".According to what I've read of this book so far, it's a shoddy piece of work being sold at an exorbitant price. My advice is to give it a miss.EDIT: Having finished the book, I'll just underline how wretched it is. The final 200 pages consist of appendices that present nearly *exactly the same information* as is featured in the first 220, in a different layout, though sometimes including copied and pasted blocks of text from the first half of the book. While I'm sure the author is well-intentioned, this book adds very little to the body of Beatles scholarship, and certainly does not serve as a "Reference Manual".I recommend readers spend their money on the works of Babiuk and (especially) Lewisohn instead.
