About the Author

Desireé Dallagiacomo is a poet, performer, and educator. She is the program director & lead teaching artist at Forward Arts, a youth spoken word and social justice writing non-profit in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee and she has been a finalist at every major national poetry slam. Her poems have been featured widely and a collection of her work has been adapted for the Vagina Monologues at Tulane University. She is the co-host of a Southern Poetry podcast, Drawl, and in 2016 she founded an annual writing retreat in rural New Mexico for young writers.

This book of poetry is amazing. Desi draws on her family and childhood and bleeds onto the page, she’s so raw and honest. Nearly every poem made me cry. I can’t thank Desi enough for the transformation she has gone through to be able to write these words down, and am so grateful she has shared herself with the world.

I stumbled across one of Desireé’s poems several years ago on Button Poetry’s YouTube channel and was instantly hooked. When I saw that she had written a book I was excited to get my hands on it. It did not disappoint, I read it cover to cover the day I received it and it evoked the gamut of emotions within me. I cannot recommend it highly enough and I thank Desireé for opening her heart and spilling it on the page for all to see and experience.

Reading Desiree’s poems is more like reading her autobiography. She uses her words to paint a picture of her soul that is both frightening and beautiful and broken and raw and loving and open. LOVE LOVE LOVE and wish I had the words to describe the passion that she paints.

I love that she was so fearless. I hope I'm as brave as she is, to share my truth.
