The Confidence Code for Girls is an essential read for every girl in her tween years. By bringing attention to girls’ inner experience of gaining and utilizing confidence, the authors not only clearly identify what confidence is comprised of, they guide and instruct the reader on how to cultivate it by challenging the common obstacles of this age. Quite similar to the cognitive-behavioral approach of therapy, this book encourages girls to take action despite unhelpful thinking patterns, to be unafraid of failure, and to challenge the worries that hold so many girls back in a real and direct way. It also provides excellent guidance on how to navigate the often judgmental and provoking world of social media. Presented in a relatable and engaging manner, girls will develop a much deeper understanding of what it means to be themselves and express that confidently. My experience as a psychologist specializing in anxiety has taught me that just as anxiety breeds self-doubt, self-doubt breeds anxiety, and the opposite of both is confidence. I am inspired by what the authors have done in offering such a tremendous guidebook that I am sure tween girls will reference time and time again in their journey to forming a solid, confident self.
I wish I had read the negative reviews before purchasing. I thought with so many positive reviews, it would be a great tool for confidence building in girls. I’m glad I started to read it first. Many references to gay sexuality/pride but zero for heterosexual.. which pushes an agenda because sexuality shouldn’t even be in this book.. unless marketed for women. Also complaints about why bathroom signs still have a woman in a dress.. and how females are as strong as males etc etc. with nothing of a traditional sense even mentioned as far as I read, let alone pushed as “goodâ€. There is nothing wrong with being feminine.. and early in the book led to overtones that this is not strong nor confident. Disappointed.
This is such an amazing concept and book with content that really relates to my 10yr old girl. She has read the book and recommends it to her friends. Her goal is to meet the authors one day soon to share her experiences.
A wonderful, well thought out and perfectly executed book for tweens. My girls (ages 12 & 11) really enjoyed it - especially the quizzes! My graphic novel lover liked the addition of quirky illustrations and comics sprinkled throughout the book. It definitely helped keep her engaged while reading. It opened up great dialogue & I loved its message of empowerment for girls. I wish I had something like this growing up. The book offered insightful strategies and was very timely for tweens of this generation. I appreciate that it included topics such as being aware of screen time and that all elusive "online perfection".I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this or gift it to all the tween girls I know and love.
I purchased this as a birthday gift for my granddaughter who will be 12 soon. One caveat is that she will pass it on to her 9 year old sister. I am reading the book, and I wish it had been available sooner. It is amazing. I hope my granddaughters are as excited about it as I am.
Essentially CBT in teen-friendly language! Absolutely plan on recommending to my pre-teen and teen patients.
Granddaughter loved it. She'll start a new school in the fall and I think it will help her in the transfer.
Purchased for my almost 12 year old daughter. She has read it several times and has passed it on to a friend. My 16 year old thought it was too "little kid" so might be better suited for tweens/younger teenagers, although applicable to all girls.
