Be patient - the time you spend with this book is worth it.

An extremely well-written book. The setting is so brutal that I frequently put the book down because I just couldn't take any more. There's humor, as well. My book club had differing opinions on that. It's all the more amazing because he didn't grow up in the gruesome village in the Eastern part of Russia.The book so illustrates that when a country has generations of leaders who abuse their citizens, a sort of fatalistic, dark society grows. Some of it was very difficult to read. The incident on the escalator, for one. This darkness and a rather tough tenderness typifies the family relationships. The father trying to toughen up his son. And the picture that was so important.I learned some things about Russia that I didn't know. How they brushed out people from pictures after they were no longer in power or in favor. How even children reported on parents.My favorite story was the first one, but I held out, reading for something more hopeful, which never came.

The mood throughout "The Tsar of Love and Techno" is bleak. People disappear, people are murdered, life goes on, what's new? The absence of connection for the characters made the book seem passionless, grey. As other reviewers have said, the stories fit together bouncing back and forth between time and locations. Marra's technique is undeniable, a literary Picasso perhaps. His use of language with its wry humor spices the book and makes it readable. Catch the rhythm and beauty of Marra's prose from this passage from the story carrying the book's title, "But before all that, we went as a family to Lake Mercury, my mother in her leopard-print bikini, my brother and I in our leopard print-bikini bottoms, and we splashed in the lake, the water a mouthful of dirty change, my open eyes burning as I watched the flailing limbs of the decapitated swimmers, and the end of the day, when everyone was sun drunk, or punch drunk, or just drunk, that hour in summer where falling inhibition and rising permissibility intersect, my father chased my mother across the gravel bank." [pp. 176-177. It makes the book memorable. While I liked the book, I did force myself to stay with it. Enjoy!

Powerfull. So well thought out and written this book is a category reserved for geniuses. The story and subject matter held little interest to me before I started to read, but I marveled at how the complex time shifts were accomplished so seamlessly. Anthony breaks a few rules, because he can.Someday the Pulitzer Prize will be on his resume. If your are a writer read this book, it will teach you things you never thought possible.

This is a brilliant, remarkable work of fiction. It is categorized as "stories" but actually the stories are interwoven to form a novel. It takes place in the USSR and modern-day Russia, from the time of Stalin's purges to the Chechen wars. The stories are not told in chronological order but eventually fit together like pieces of a puzzle. The characters are fully three dimensional and evolve over time. Highly recommended.

I had to read this book for my book group. I am not always on board with the selections and frankly this one was a challenge to get through. I can see the artistry in the novel, but the characters, setting and the humor was only moderately interesting to me. Usually I like satire, but I think this one was a little too dark in a vein unappreciated by me.

I read this book for class first. I returned because it was worth multiple reads.The prose is fantastic- fresh, witty and so unexpected. The arc of the book spans generations and that is what makes this such good historical fiction. Throughout it all, there is the vivacious spirit of its long suffering characters. Like them, hate them, they’re alive and will have you know it.The interweaving of plotlines is clever and makes my writer heart sing. I love it very much.

Complicated and partitioned so that you have to pay rapt attention or re-read or...be lost. I loved the painter who kept his family immortal even though they were been expunged in Stalin's purges--he kept them alive in the hidden pockets of his paintings, at various ages and in different living conditions and professions, even serfdom...Brilliant and complex.
