I have not studied biblical Greek for almost 40 years, so the book has benefitted me as I try to bone up on a neglected part of my personal study and discipline. The book is updated from previous versions and flows well.
This grammar works very well as a training tool for teaching or studying basic NT Greek. Each lesson is laid out very logically with enough work to help you develop your skill without overwhelming you.The methodology is very simple. Vocabulary with a simple point and some memorization work to help you grasp the concept for that lesson. It is easier to teach through than other basic grammars I have looked at, simply because of it's focus.I would like to say that those who have criticized it for the 8 case system may be correct...but I like the 8 case system because it gives beginning students a stronger intuitive sense that context does drive a lot of meaning in Greek. That is important for students to understand. It is a great text book, designed to take 2 semesters for an average student.Learning NT Greek is not hard. You can do it. This text book is one of the better options you have. A different pathway that helps you accomplish the same task is Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. I happen to like the approach of Summers a little better. Both of those two Grammars are high on my list. I also recommend FDB (Funk's Grammar) and A.T. Robertson. Finally, the verb chart is handy to have, but not necessary since they are now standard in most software programs for NT Greek...including BibleWorks 7.0 which I have and love.I hope you enjoy Summers textbook as much as I have.
Comment in June 2007--------------------I study on my own. This is an excellent grammar book. The book provides clear and succint explanation on basic grammatical rules with illustrated tables for quick review. The tables in each chapter can be referred back for comparison with a new lesson. The exercises on each chapter enable me to apply what has been learned. The student guide provides the answer though there are occassionally minor mistakes such as a city is translated as a church. I have read many other texts but I strongly recommends this one.Additional Comment in June 2010-------------------------------Induction Method and Deduction Method are alternative ways to learn a language. Mounce provided an integrated approach. I started with Inductive Method using Dobson's book. After an enjoyable start, I got stuck halfway through as others experienced. Inductive Method soon leads to confusion as systematic rules are not provided.I then switched to Black's text but I didn't get the whole picture after completion. I was frustrated with my efforts which included my first attempt with Mounce's BBG. I switched to this book and it guided me through the jungle. As the title suggested, I got the essentials. I read the book twice, including the exercises. Over the past three years, I have completed half of the Greek NT with Gramcord and the Chinese version of the Word Pictures as aid. Meantime, I made my second attempt with BBG. I just came back from a long trip, spending my time on the train and the plane over a four days' trip making my third attempt with BBG and went through the first 258 pages of his 336 page book. I could only now benefit from BBG. It is probably the ultimate text but it is not a good starter. "Essential of NT" is the best introductory text. It helps you get through the jungle without being lost and once out of the jungle you know what you need to know and explore further, confident though also you now have a map and a compass in hand. By then, simulation gets easy and the integrated approach provided by BBG would make memorization easy. Deductive Method is perhaps hard work but it helps one master the necessary details before he can understand it. Of this method, "Essentials of NT" is the best. Perhaps, it would be nice if Mounce could find time to write a text at a level between "Greek for The Rest of Us" and BBG.
This is a wonderful text for first-year NT Greek. It is much thinner (more concise, less intimidating) than most others (e.g., Mounce's *Basics of Biblical Greek*). There is no answer key for the exercises in the back of each chapter; you need the Student's Guide fo that. It uses the 8-case system (instead of 5-case), but makes it clear in the declension tables that Genitive/Ablative and Dative/Locative/Instrumental can be grouped together. I highly recommend this book.
This book reminds me of my four years of New Testament Greek in college.Oh, yeah, this is the same book I had in the 1960's. Dry and concise.I just wish someone would write a clear Greek grammar that I could enjoy.Arrived quickly enough and in pristine condition.
This text is for my Greek class and its what the instructor uses; therefore, it serves it's purpose for the class. I personally would like to see pronunciations of words and for the concepts to be explained a bit more.
I appreciate the book, Essentials of New Testament Greek. It provides additional information and insight into the Greek language of the NT writers of the Bible. I also must purchase a replacement NT grammar book, "Teach Yourself New Testament Greek," to continue guiding me in learning this fascinating language of early Christians. I hope to get a hardback copy. My paperback copy was very delicate, and is now gone. I have a Greek-English NT Bible, and also a Greek-English lexicon, which are wonderful. Some day I hope to take a Seminary course in New Testament Greek. Essentials of New Testament Greek is helping my understand the language a good bit more.Laura J. Gray Mitchell
No better book anywhere for beginners. Don't be followed by larger text books. Massive amounts of info are counter-productive when someone is trying to understand the basics. I rejected Mounce, and went back to this.
