This was my favorite book of poetry as a child and it has stood the test of time. I now give it as a gift to people I really like. Most recent purchase was through Southwest Reader. The book arrived quickly and in wonderful condition.
I read it to my kids 35 years ago, and now we're getting copies for grandkids. It's the best.
My grand kids love papa to read them poems in the evening, gives more spending time withyour little love ones.
This is a beautiful book and I'm very happy with it.
I grew up on a diet of Berenstain Bears and Shel Silverstein, with some Laura Ingalls Wilder thrown in for sustenance; my husband grew up with such books as Untermeyer’s treasury of poetry, the lucky guy. Lucky for me, I was naturally discerning enough to have been drawn to good writing even back then, but these days, I somewhat mourn the dearth of “the really good stuff†in my childhood. My mother-in-law has been kind enough to keep my boys well-supplied with beautiful books such as this volume and similar treasures, and my inner child rejoices at this late acquaintance with classics. As a homeschooling mom of four boys, I reach for this book almost daily, whether to start the day out or bring it to a close. Typically, my rough-housing, noisy little men will howl in protest, and I may even have to force them to sit with me; but within a few lines, they are spellbound. I love this treasury because I can always find a good, bold “boy poem,†such as “The Tiger,†or “The Highwayman,†or the lustfully vengeful “The Inchcape Rock†to draw my boys in, and then I can quickly flip to a poem like “The Daffodils,†with its gorgeous imagery, and they don’t even notice that we’re suddenly reading about flowers! And that they are liking it! “The Loreley†and “Moy Castle†provide a gate to a romantic, mythic world that fully entrances them, while the rich language of “The Fish,†accompanied by the sensually colored illustration brings the quotidian to fresh life. All in all, the poetry itself does exactly what it is supposed to, drawing the boys out of themselves and their pre-selected interests, and into the big wide world, whether it be real or fantasy. The pages are so compact with poems and illustrations, that I can flip to almost any page and be guaranteed that whatever is on it will draw them in. The poems feed my own soul, filling my need for poetic language and images, in selections that are short enough to fit in at the end of a packed day, before I kiss them goodnight. Though not frequent, it is not uncommon that they may even ask to read a poem, which rejoices my heart. I can only hope that one day my own sons will recall these lines, and with them, the memories of us sitting together, being fed by words.
I was cleaning out some boxes of children's books, keeping what I consider classic while giving the rest to my grandchildren or to the libraries. I doubled-back between this current edition and the previous editions to make sure this was the same one...it is, and I highly recommend this. I took a class in children's literature back in the 70's and I fondly remember it as being one of the most enjoyable classes I had in college the first time around. This book lasted through my children's growing up and is now going through new useage with my grandchildren. I love the way this book is organized. If you have a child with specific interests such as limericks (and I know few children who don't get a kick out of limericks) you can go to that section without delay.I grew up with Joan Walsh Anglund poignant drawings. They are not particularly 'great' art, but for children and in this book, they are vastly more suitable than the poorly drawn and maddening stuff put out in cartoons (especially of the Pokemon variety which will set off seizures in children). They say the age of this book is for four years to eight year olds. That isn't true. Every parent should try to take the time to read to all children in whatever form necessary...and it should start at age one. Reading aloud (or signing books) to your children not only makes essential bonds, but it also teaches children what you think is important, and also teaches them how to stop and pay attention. The massive complaints about restless children and the abuse of labeling (ADD/ADHD) has its beginnings in simple things such as turning the television/computers off and reading to your children.... should be showing the pictures and pages of this book in a sampling, so that parents can make informed decisions about children's books. If you only get one child's book this year, get this one and sit down with your children and read.Karen Sadler,Science Education,University of Pittsburgh
I was given this book when I was two by my grandmother, a librarian. I have poured over this book from the very first day it was given to me. First, looking at the pictures and having my parents read the nursery rhymes. In elementary school, I began to read it myself. By late elementary school through high school, the book had become a useful reference. I still have the one given to me by my grandmother and absolutely treasure it. I look forward to sharing my book with my soon-to-be born first child. This collection covers everything from nursery rhymes to Shakespeare. Wonderful illustrations and a great collection of poetry, which doesn't believe that children are too young to grasp the meaning of the poems.
Beautiful poems. This is a very lovely the book. The pictures are old fashioned and I loved them as a kid. I look at this book with my daughter now and she loves it also. The edition pictured is the one i have. Perfect poems for an older child. These aren't nursery rhymes but they are good for say a four or five year old on up through adult hood.
