My hubby and I are new to Mah Jongg and have been watching YouTube videos to learn the basics. Sometimes, the videos go way to fast for us to follow or see the examples of tiles long enough. Videos are great but there's nothing like sitting down with a drink of your choice and a print book to read and re-read info at your own learning pace. That's where this excellent book comes in.Everything from the most basic of basics to strategy tips (we haven't gotten that far yet), is clearly explained in down to earth terms that are geared to the newest player.We found the section on deciding what category to play the most helpful so far. This is the most complicated part for us, and even though we watched many videos on this subject, nothing compared to the explanations given in this book. We read this chapter at least 3 times and will probably refer to it again. The exercises that follow the explanations are a wonderful way to practice the lesson, and by doing the ones on choosing the right category, we are starting to make some sense on how to make this important decision.We heartily recommend this book for brand new beginnners, and if you haven't played for a while, this would be a great refresher course.

If you're intent on learning how to play Mah Jongg, this book is a great help. Yes, you can learn from other players, but if you still need remedial help (I did!), get this book. Author Elaine Sandberg writes plainly, in uncomplicated sentences. She has organized the chapters in the best possible way for learning. Each chapter has a summary and then a small quiz at the end. You need to do them, as they recap what you've learned and you can determine where you need to go back and re-read.Take her advice and set-up the hands. It will familiarize you with the various possibilities. I took it a step further. I set-up hands using this year's card (not the dated one she supplies at the back of her book). Then using the method she recommends (position tiles on rack by suits and numbers first, in ascending order; then look at the card, finding which section is the most opportune one with which to play your hand), choose the hand you want to play. I did this, but with a variation. I asked a knowledgeable Mah Jongg friend to come over and look at the four racks I'd set-up. I then explained to her why I chose to play the hands I'd selected. She listened, and then either agreed, or pointed out different ways to look at the tiles and play a different hand. Sometimes, it was within the same section, sometimes not. Using the book and a friend's help makes the lessons even more meaningful.The most important lessons I gleaned are: how to set-up the rack (to better select the hands); familiarize yourself with the 50 different possible hands; and (for a beginner) do not change hands mid-game. Allowing yourself to lose only strengthens your play, by seeing a hand through to its end. After you have gained confidence, try to switch hands if your original choice isn't working for you.Aside from Ms. Sandberg's book, the next best advice I can give you for learning is to play with kind, non-threatening players. Seasoned, no-nonsense, cutthroat players will not be patient and you will quickly become a Mah Jongg drop-out. My group is patient, willing to teach, and helps me to re-hash each hand I play at the end of every game. They are encouraging, supportive, and kind. Without them--and the book, I would have given up months ago. Really. So, get A Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg.

My neighbor and I decided to take a beginners' class in mah jongg offered to "seniors" at our suburban community center. Five other women had the same idea. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that the instructor lined up to teach the class was a no-show. But that didn't stop us. One of the women went online at amazon.com and discovered Elaine Sandberg's "A Beginner's Guide to Mah Jongg." We bought seven books, ordered seven cards that display the 2012 hands published by the National Mah Jongg League and we have taught ourselves the game! This book was perfect because it's written in a clear, concise manner, illustrated with many explanatory diagrams and generously laced with humor, which a beginning player needs to lighten the way to learning this challenging game. All of my new "mah jongg friends" took the "class" for the same reason as I did: to spend some fun time playing a game that would stimulate the brain. Without both instructor and book, this class would never have met a second time. Now we're into our third month and, in addition to the regular class time, we're frequently playing twice a week. And we've found an eighth player who will join us as soon as she finishes reading the book. "A Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg" gets a five-star rating from all in our group, who read it easily in one evening, applied its rules and strategy and are now having a great time stretching our minds as we play the American version of this ancient Chinese game.

Many thanks to Elaine Sandberg for writing this book. I am a beginner and just starting out with mahjongg. This book has been very valuable. I understand the concepts and how to build hands for the game. Before this book I was lost.The one drawback is that the book follows the National Mahjongg League 2004 Card. The current card is 2018. But the principals of how to play are the same so it is fine.This book is a must have for anyone who wants to learn how to play as well as for those who have been playing for sonetime. It contains rules, definitions and strategy.I am so glad i purchased this book

The most useful information was on how to perform the Charleston. Also, very good on how to decide between two possible hands while the game is in play. I already knew how to play when I read this book, however, I still learned a thing or two.The book explains the game step by step. It would be best to observe a game before reading the book because sometimes simple things in the game require lots of explanation in the book. Therefore, it's easier to understand the text, if you've already seen the game in action.
