(Dictated by my 6-year-old son): I love it because the history is really amazing, and we also like the elements in the story because they're real and things are very, very great in the story because everything in the story happened. The creatures that are in the story have different ways of life than we do because they have things that we don't have. At the beginning, at the death of the dinosaurs, the dinosaurs died out because of all the ash in the air and it's a really great book.Mom's review: This is a terrific, fully illustrated overview of the history of the world, from the origins of life to the present day. About 20% of the book is devoted to early natural history (evolution, dinosaurs, etc.) and the rest covers human history from hunter-gatherers through the end of the 20th century. The text is informative and challenging but not too complex to be understood by younger children (I'd say 6 and up). We have several children's world history encyclopedias, and this one is our favorite -- we can curl up and enjoy it like a story.

We LOVE this book. We've been reading a 2-page spread almost every night for the past year. My kids love it, and we've learned a lot. We don't always understand what's being talked about, but the illustrations are captivating, and there have been some cool internet links. I recommend this to everyone.

Purchased for my soon to be 5th grader (homeschool). We are excited about this book. It's very big and heavy and packed with pictures and information. Our school provides us with Kingfisher encyclopedia. It is very good, but for older students. My daughter gets very bored with it quick.

This is a very well done book. When I show it to friends, they love it, and many have gone out to buy it for themselves. This has helped us get a clear time line of history, showing what was happening all over the world at any given time, for a more complete perspective.The illustrations are very nice and just enough information is given per subject. We are using it in conjunction with The Story of the World series, by Susan Wise Bauer.I highly recommend it for homeschoolers, but also for school children, to supplement textbooks, (which seem to be rather poorly done these days).

We're using this as part of a homeschool curriculum and our kids always want us to read more from this book than what is assigned. The older kids (9 and 7 years old), read this on their own for fun as well. The information is consistent with the other sources we use for curriculum, as well, and it is consistent with what I remember from my years of study. So I think the info in here is as accurate as it should be. Enjoy!

I love Usborne's history books. This one does a great job of outlining world history for children and adults alike. Tons of information with colorful illustrations throughout. I bought it because I was studying for a middle school social studies Praxis and wanted to brush up, but likely would have bought a copy anyway just because I enjoy reading about history. I haven't decided yet if I will take this to school and use it in my classroom, or keep it at home for my own enjoyment. :)

My son loves this book! I have been looking for a book he would love for a couple of months. All of a sudden he was not so interested in Franklin and Bill Peet and Cynthia Rylant read-alouds, that have been his old stand-bys. He liked Roscoe Riley. He liked Tashi. But since then, nothing much has really been very interesting to him.He loves this book, though. He loves the pictures and he likes the information. The sets of 2 pages are just the right length for him to understand.He is 6, almost 7, by the way.

Our son is an avid reader, but we were still not sure how to weave in this "required" reading with his usual fare of detective novels. We need not have worried. The book is well written and interesting--he read it straight through in a week.
