My wife just recently started reading stoic philosophy and so I got this book for her. She read the book and said it was great because it is written to be accessible to people who are not necessarily in academia and the writing was very clear. She was looking for more of a quick read than a formal academic analysis. The author did a great job covering nuanced information in a very accessible way. She said she would recommend it.

I had been considering Stoic philosophy recently, and wanting to learn more. I was about to buy and read a copy of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations when I got a chance to read this, which I figured I'd tackle first. It's a bit easier to read, and very well written. I appreciated the blend present within each chapter: first, a biographical story of some part of Marcus' life, and then the distilled essence of applicable Stoic philosophy to whatever subject the chapter covered. I like the addition of modern psychological thought (CBT) to the Stoic philosophy. The author makes a pretty convincing case for the many parallels he draws, and there's plenty here from both schools of thought that will help me (and other readers) improve our lives. Self-help isn't much good if it's not applicable, and fortunately, there's plenty of Stoic wisdom here that has already been of benefit in my life. I know I didn't soak it all up in my first reading, so this is a book I'll be coming back to in the future. But first, the original Meditations. I've still gotta read them.

this is an easy to read book that chronicles the life and ideas of Marcus Aurelius, one of Romes emperors who practiced and developed the philosophy of Stoicism. The best part for me were all the stories from Aurelius' life that so aptly illustrated the concepts the author was writing about. I also enjoyed the beginning chapters which were a great introduction to the history of stoicism for those of us who didn't know the details. I've been wanting to know more aboutstoicismand this was the perfect introdution.

This is a great attempt in explaining the circumstances that may have formed or at least refined one of the most influential Stoic and his legacy. Written partly in the format of a biography, each chapter provides a good mix of history, interpretations, similarities to modern-day psychological methods, and a few practical hints on how to potentially incorporate them in one's daily life. Thankfully, this is not a typical self-help book nor an attempt to McDolanize Stoicism (the mindfulness industry does that!)... Nor is this too focused on biography or historical details that would interest only a history aficionado. This good blend sustains the reader throughout the book, despite some repetitions when it comes to the actual techniques itself (for example the notions of cognitive distancing and functional analyses come up very often almost in the same context). A reader also benefits from a succinct overview and progression of various Greco-Roman schools of philosophy. Overall, this is the best book that has helped me develop a good understanding how Marcus may have become the highly respected Stoic and a much more deeper appreciations of "Meditations".
