About the Author

Brian Ashcraft is a senior contributing editor for the video-game site Kotaku and a columnist at The Japan Times. Ashcraft was previously a contributing editor at Wired magazine; his work has also appeared in Popular Science, the Guardian, and the design journal Metropolis, as well as numerous other publications worldwide. He has authored several books on Japanese culture, including Japanese Tattoos: History * Culture * Design. Originally from Texas, he has called Osaka home since 2001. Whisky reviewer Yuji Kawasaki launched his leading Japanese-language blog One More Glass of Whisky in 2013 after feeling that there weren't enough independent voices in the country's online whisky community. His blog is one of the most popular sites for whisky tasting notes. Photographer Idzuhiko Ueda has been documenting Japan's traditional arts from bunraku to its local sake production for over three decades. He currently runs his own photography studio, specializing in architectural photography. Foreword writer Lew Bryson has been writing about beer and spirits for over 20 years and was the editor of Whisky Advocate magazine from 1996 to 2015. Japanese whisky is such an interesting topic, and both the fascinating history as well as the relatively small number of distilleries makes it ideal for a book such as this--Ashcraft is able to be both comprehensive and detailed, while still keeping a good pace that keeps the reader's interest. I enjoyed the deep dives into the major distilleries' histories and offerings, and really appreciated the tasting notes by Yuji Kawasaki (if you read Japanese, his blog on whisky is quite interesting). Together, this information is nice for either the novice or the old hand who is reading this book thinking, "What do I want to try next?" And, indeed, you can't read this book without wanting a dram of the good stuff in your hand. Interest in Japanese whisky is really booming right now, and while I have mixed emotions as (selfishly) it is driving up prices and creating scarcity, overall I'm thrilled that demand is growing--and I'm treating it as an opportunity to try new offerings as some of my old favorites (I'm looking at you, Hibiki 17) either become too expensive or too hard to find. The pictures were really evocative as well, and they made me want to go around and visit the different distilleries. The only flaw with the book that I could find, and it is a minor one, is that the Kindle version had a few small typos and errors--hopefully the publisher catches these and fixes them in future versions. Overall, however, a fun and informative read. Honestly, the only REAL problem with this book? It makes you thirsty!

I recognized Brian Ashcraft's name from Kotaku online articles, I only recently noticed he is a whisky fan/writer after his story about the fake Hibiki whisky culprits (who were arrested). So with a bit of reserved judgement I purchased this book since it was a very good price for a decent hardcover text and published by Tuttle, who I have found publish pretty solid texts.I was immediately put at ease and cracked a huge smile because this book immediately dove into a fun history of Japanese whisky's foundations. I enjoyed the stories of the initial exposure to the spirit when Commodore Perry forced Japan to open their figurative "doors" to the Western powers of the day. From there the story takes some interesting twists, arriving at the modern era and the current world we live in where Japanese whisky has become scarce and expensive (and more exciting than ever!).I would say about 2/3 of the book is highlighting notable producers in Japan - but the stories leading up to, as well as the stories about the current market and current producers are where the book really shines. I don't care how many bottles Suntory makes, I don't care about what they make and where they are located - I can read their website - plus I've been there. What I care about is the "why" and the "how", and those are the questions repeatedly answered even without the reader asking. How did Nikka start? Because Taketsuru was having creative differences with his co-founder at Suntory? Interesting.So many of the sections about the individual distilleries are written from a journalistic point of view - I love it. It's like being there. And I guess that is due to the book being written by/about one of Japan's best whisky bloggers.The only drawback is that the book came a bit worn since it is not covered in plastic. But it's a good price, and I don't really care if the golden lettering of "Japanese Whisky" has flaked off in places. It's still a solid book at a good price, and truly a great book for those getting into Japanese whiskey, or those like myself who have consumed insane bottles, visited at least 2 distilleries while in Japan, and prefers Japanese whisky to most Scotch.

Incredibly well researched and well written. The historical anecdotes that make up the early part of the book are fascinating and paced perfectly. They include a great story about the appearance of Suntory at a whiskey event seemingly serving as their contemporary debut in 2005, as well as an almost unbelievable story about US occupation troops drinking what they thought was Suntory whiskey that was later analyzed as a special brew for kamikaze pilots that included cocaine and strychnine...Part of the strength of this book is it's intimate understanding of Japanese culture, food and drink, without which a comprehensive book of this kind could not be written.

Excellent book, this is why I still buy real hardcover books. Well written, excellent first hand information about Japanese culture and one their most interesting and exciting products- whisky! A fascinating story how both domestic and world perception of the best Japanese whisky has led to it virtually going extinct in the retail marketplace. It may be another decade until the most desired spirits return to the market place at a fair price. I hope Brian will write the next chapter in this story and I will be at the top of the list to buy that book. The photos in the book are a gorgeous adjunct to telling this story.

After tasting a few whiskeys on a recent trip to Japan (and coming back stateside with a few more) my interest in Japanese whisky was piqued. I have another one of Ashcraft's books and figured if this one was half as interesting as the other it would be worth the read. It turns out it was better... beautiful photos, in-depth history, and awesome reviews really took my knowledge up a level. I wish I had this book before I went to Japan... I guess I'll have to go back to see if I can get my hands on some of the bottles that were featured in the book.
