Not much at all of the back story that led her to leave home in such a dramatic, unexplained fashion is told - she left home for Ireland when she was 17 and traveled the world for a few years, landing in Australia where she lived with a man she was deeply connected with, but chose to leave with great mutual heartbreak to return to the US and find motorcycles and the science of Physics, the point at which this book begins. There probably is an interesting and unique story in all that, the seeds of who she was and what she was seeking are in the years and events left in the dark before motorcycles came into the story. Finding a strong appreciation for the explanations and concepts that studying Physics provides, and similarly connecting with motorcycles and all that comes with them can have a profound effect on one's biography and probably do in Lily's case as they both did in mine 60 years ago. What nurture motorcycling provides her and why she finds enough of herself in that to warrant writing a book with "motorcycles" in its title could be an interesting read. But only if the nature of the open connection that motorcycles were able to find in her is defined- the absent backstory. She said once in an interview that she was terrified to "open the doors" to personal things which explains why it's absent. In "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance" by Robert Pirsig, often mentioned in conversation about this book, no such restraint appears. Pirsig's candor about his insanity and the result of its treatment are clear and detailed and make his book the epic, valued commentary it is. Had Lily been as candid about her life up to the point where she begins her book, the possibility that hers could be as much an epic as Pirsig's is exists. As others have said, it's too early for Lily to write a memoir.Nonetheless watching a young woman deal with young women's issues and involvement with bikes and mechanical stuff is well enough written to warrant reading this. It's a good read for times when deep concentration aren't possible - on a noisy airplane or a bus, or when someone else is watching a noisy TV show, etc. Unlike "Zen and the Art..." you won't have to stop after any sentences to ponder what they mean.

Read this book in one sitting. Author writes really well. Compelling events and places are described very well.Interesting approach for titling with Physics principles.Initially wanted to know about bikes loved when I started reading it, but her narrative more than makes up for less detail on bikes.If the author is reading this review I'd advise her to keep riding.I returned to riding after 25 years away. I regret time not riding.In over 30 years of riding and driving I think I've probably driven over 500,000 kms in 9 cars and under 50,000 kms on 6 bikes and found the bike rides more memorable than all the car drives. So I'd say that riding a bike is about an order or magnitude more memorable than driving a car. Closest feeling on ground to flying - feeling a balance and a presence that I've not had driving cars.

A great read for a plane trip, a day by the pool, a rainy afternoon.Yes, it did make me want to buy a motorcycle, and it did initiate a note to self: Reread "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".The idea of a 'memoir' by a twenty-something is ... questionable (as in "What the heck does a twenty-something know about life?'), however, that has more to do with my expectation that a REAL memoir is written by someone >seventy who ponders their youth from a wizened and cynical perspective. I would classify this book as more of an annotated journal. I appreciate the absence of preachy lessons learned. This is a delightful slice of personal history that ends with a curiosity for life's next adventure.

This was a great story, I found I could relate to much of what Lilly was working on in her life while in her young adult years. I put my bike away a few winters ago and just haven't made the time for it lately, after reading this book I think I'm ready to prioritize some riding time! Great descriptions of how it feels to be on a bike, and really heart warming to read about a lady rider in my area!

Didn’t write a lot about motorcycle but more of her struggles with growing up. Good read but wouldn’t be my first book I would recommend to a friend

i loved this book! i had placed it on my 'wish list' at least 6 months prior to it's release date. as a fellow woman rider, i could just hear myself and see myself in this book. i've done many long distance trips and she describes them brilliantly.

This was a nice easy read about a girl and her bikes and some life's lessons. I enjoyed it.

A great motorcycle memoir from a bit of an atypical point-of-view. Lily Brooks-Dalton writes well, making you long for good motorcycle weather when you can pull the bike out and get lost for an afternoon.
